Instagram live, stories and integrated Boomerang videos? It seems as though Instagram are happily packing their bags and leaving their past life of carefully curated snaps behind them in the pursuit to become Snapchat’s biggest rival. And with last month’s roll-out of multiple photos and videos in a single post, there’ll be no wistful looking back at the static standalone square photos that helped to make the brand a success.
"With this update, you no longer have to choose the single best photo or video from an experience you want to remember. Now, you can combine up to 10 photos and videos in one post and swipe through to see them all." (Instagram)
How to make Instagram’s new slideshow posts work for your brand
Want to get involved? Read our step-by-step guide to creating a
1) Click on Library to view your photo reel, then tap SELECT MULTIPLE and choose from up to 10 of your favourite images and videos.
2) Now you’ve got the snaps, tap Next and decide whether or not you want to apply the same filter to all, or edit images and videos separately. To add different filters, scroll through and select each image or video individually, apply filter and edit as necessary. Click Done when you’re happy and move on to the next one.
3) Ready to go live? Hit Next to be taken to the familiar final screen before sharing. Select your imagery from the preview box to scroll through and tag bloggers and models in their featured photos and videos. Write a caption that sums up the occasion (there’s only one caption option for the whole post at the moment, so make it a good one!). Add the location, then Share and watch the likes roll in! Likes are attributed to the whole carousel, so you’re just going to have to presume that they love all the images and videos equally.
4) You can share your Instagram image and video carousel to linked social posts as normal – that means instant Facebook albums created and shared directly from Instagram! Integrated social simplicity.
Inspiration from the brands getting involved with Instagram slideshows right now
From magazines, photography publications, retailers, food blogs and more, brands are experimenting with how Instagram’s photo and video carousels might look as part of their social media strategy.
Look magazine uses an image carousel to showcase some of the best-dressed men at the Oscars, and takes the opportunity to find out the consensus on Ryan Gosling’s shirt.
National Geographic take the opportunity to exhibit even more stunning nature photography per post.
Sweaty Betty showcases their social competition with multiple posts.
Buzzfeed Tasty opts for one recipe video of a Banana Bread Bottom Cheesecake being made, followed by a still image of the finished product to get the taste buds going.
Whistles have used this feature recently for collabs with bloggers, leading back to their journal.
While Next features carefully curated outfit flat lays, just in time for Mother’s Day.
We’re not sure yet whether multiple images and video posts will encourage users to post more of their unedited photos, or just 10 perfectly refined images, with the odd video thrown in! But our Social Media Executive, Louise, thinks there are plenty of possibilities for brands to explore how multiple posts might work for them…
“The introduction of organic album posts to Instagram is a great opportunity for brands, allowing them to tell a story with their products. Visually, multiple image posts look the same as paid carousel ads and although you won’t get the same engagement metrics from organic posts as you do from the paid carousel ads, they have the potential to gain higher engagement than a single photo post.”
